It has been announced that new types of domain names are to become available. Currently there are only 22 ‘generic’ domain name endings, (for example .com, .net, .org), excluding anything country specific, for example .uk or .au (Australia).
From the beginning of 2012, ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers – who are responsible for the generic (non country specific) top level domain names, plan to dramatically increase the number of domain endings. Furthermore domain names will become available in any language or script, opening interesting new opportunities for registering domain names in languages such as Arabic or Japanese.
Peter Dengate Thrush, Chairman of ICANN's Board of Directors has said:
"Today's decision will usher in a new Internet age. We have provided a platform for the next generation of creativity and inspiration."
Reports have suggested big brand names are lining up to register their own domain name endings, for example it has been widely reported that Coca Cola are likely to register .coke. However, this new ‘gold rush’ for personalised domain endings is unlikely to involve anyone other than very large companies, with the application fee expected to be around $200,000 and a further $25,000 per year due in annual fees.
